A bit about Dr. Patel.
Dr. Nirav Patel is a board-certified vascular surgeon. Vascular surgery is the arteries and veins rather than the spine: blocked arteries in the legs, aneurysms, varicose and other venous disease, dialysis access, and the wounds that stop healing when circulation is poor. A great deal of it is now done through a catheter and a puncture instead of an open incision, which is why so much of the work is outpatient.
He has been Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery at St. John's Riverside Hospital since 2015, and Medical Director of its Center for Vascular Disease and Wound Healing over the same period; from 2017 to 2024 he was also the hospital's Director of Surgery. Since July 2024 he has been Director of Vascular Surgery at Essen Healthcare. He has been an attending vascular surgeon at St. Joseph's Medical Center since 2009.
His vascular surgery fellowship was at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn under Enrico Ascher, MD, following a five-year general surgery residency and internship at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center, an affiliate of Weill Cornell Medical College. During those years he trained on the subspecialty services at Memorial Sloan Kettering — hepatobiliary, colorectal, breast, and gastric and mixed tumors — on cardiothoracic surgery and the burn ICU at Weill Cornell / New York-Presbyterian, and as chief on trauma surgery at Lincoln Medical Center. He earned his DO at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine and a BA in biology, with honors, at Hofstra University.
He is a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation, which means he reads the vascular ultrasound himself rather than sending the study out, and has been certified in hyperbaric medicine since 2011 — directly relevant to the wound half of the practice. He has precepted medical students for Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine as an adjunct clinical professor since 2013. His published work is largely venous and endovascular: superior vena cava filters, duplex arteriography in acute limb-threatening ischemia, balloon angioplasty to place tunneled dialysis catheters, office-based surgery for vascular surgeons. In 2009 his endovascular paper took the Anton N. Sidawy, MD Award at the Annual Vascular Fellows Abstract Presentation. He is a Fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and a member of the Society for Vascular Surgery, the American Osteopathic Association, and the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society. Away from the office: golf, skiing, basketball, and travel.
